CHILDHOOD LABOUR by Jamiu Ahmed

STOP CHILDHOOD LABOUR

What are children as small as (7, 8, 10) years doing on the streets of Lagos in the name of hawking to sustain the family? What?

Just tell me in your wildest dreams, how on earth it's proper to subject these innocent kids to street vending without considering the dangers that revolve around it. Kids that should be in school, learning.

In the pursuit of wandering about for patronage of whatever they sell under harsh weather conditions:

Some of these kids are often bullied, harassed, assaulted, molested, victimized and liable to all sorts of social vices.

Some may go missing, some are often knocked down by cars, some may be found dead, lying helplessly on the road.

It often breaks my heart seeing these kids become a victim of such ill-fate. They don't deserve it.

I know some "Wokist", would still argue that one gender is more victimized than the other, doesn't that sound dumb? Are they (kids) both not liable to be victimized?

These children go through a lot on the streets trying to make ends meet.

It's a phase I have gone through, too.
Yes, I have hawked on the streets of Surulere. So,  I know how it feels. It's a phase of my life I don't like remembering, because the experiences were awful and very tormenting, even to date.

Some adoptive parents are even fond of bringing children from the village, promising their parents of giving them a better life; especially good education, but when they get to the city, they would be forced into childhood Labour, and still punish them brutally if they refused to do that.

Which sort of family can have the guts to bear or adopt kids without planning on how to provide for them?

I know some of these children don't have a choice. I know the country is hard, too,  but it shouldn't be an excuse to subject these children to such ill-fate.

Therefore, parents, adoptive parents and guidance should be urged to provide for their children / adopted children till they attain that age of maturity to fend for themselves.

Childhood labour has become a prevalent and widely adopted culture of our society, most especially in the so-called megacities and its suburbs, childhood labour at any level should be frowned on and phased out in our society.

Do not deprive kids of their rights to go to school and play.
